We can’t really know what could happen in one day. Sometimes we think the day has ended and we say that nothing out of the ordinary has happened. Sometimes we even say it is boring. But not this particular hot summer day a few days ago; I thought it will be the same as any ordinary day. My shift is almost done; dinner time at a middle class restaurant where I work as a waitress is almost over. There are only a few patrons left, only those who came in late in a few scattered tables and a group of noisy people farther. Suddenly a distressed moaning came from the table occupied by someone who had been coming here regularly since a few months back. He was slipping to the floor, clutching his front shirt, fighting for breath, and totally collapsed on the floor. Somebody yelled for 911 and somebody asks if there is a doctor around. But it seemed like there is no doctor. I was looking around too, hoping to find somebody who can help him. And then it dawned on me that there is nobody but me who can possibly help the man until the paramedics is here. The catch word there is “possibly” because I was immediately scared. I have just received my CPR and first aid certification and I am scared about using what I know now that this is real. But part of the mindset is to act quickly because time is essential, that is why I cannot think about my fear but just went on. I mumbled under my breath that I have CPR training and gave him CPR and in less than 5 minutes, the paramedics arrived. I heaved a sigh of relief and a prayer that I have taken the time to learn online CPR or else nobody will do it for that poor fellow and he might not make it.
It is really remarkable when you know what to do in case of an emergency. Had I not stepped in and volunteered that I know how to do cpr, that man could be dead because he wasn’t breathing when I came to him and it took a while for the paramedics to arrive because of the distance. How grateful I am that I have taken the time to learn that course online. And how glad I am that there is such a website, the American Academy of CPR and First Aid, Inc., who offers this kind of training for people like me who doesn’t even have the time to be trained in the usual way and for having the foresight to offer this kind of training.
